Chapter Forty-Seven

‘Is many, many kinds of bad monster in Romania,’ began Mihai.

‘Hey,’ said Kevin. ‘Liz ain’t no monster, Mihai. Don’t go saying that.’

Liz touched her father’s arm. ‘Let him continue, Dad. Monster is as good a word as any.’ She could still taste Kevin’s blood on her tongue. She wanted to think that the flavour repulsed her, but the truth was that she had never tasted anything so good. If that didn’t make her a monster, then nothing did. ‘There’s no point pretending any more. I need to know everything.’

Mihai continued. ‘So, is many words in Romania for talking about monster. First is strigoi.’

That wasn’t one of the words he had used when he’d first accused her of being a vampire. ‘Does that mean vampire?’ she asked.

‘No. Strigoi is most common monster. Is kind of demon that lives in person. Is also name of person who has strigoi inside them. You understand?’

‘I think so. A strigoi is someone who is possessed by a demon. Or at least, they behave as if they do. People used to believe that demonic possession was the cause of epilepsy and other mental illnesses. Go on.’

‘So strigoi is demon,’ continued Mihai. ‘Strigoi change shape into other animals. Is very strong and has good smell. Likes to eat people.’

‘That sounds like a werewolf,’ said Kevin.

Mihai shook his head. ‘Not werewolf. Werewolf is vârcolac. Can only change into wolf. Strigoi may be wolf. But may be bear. May be bird. May be rabbit.’

‘So a strigoi is a shape-shifter, and a werewolf is a kind of strigoi that can only change into wolf form?’

‘Yes. Then next is moroi.’

‘Moroi,’ said Kevin, turning the strange word over in his mouth. ‘So, is that a vampire?’

‘No. Moroi is other very bad monster. Moroi is son of strigoi. Can also be wolf or bear or bird or rabbit. Very strong and fast, like strigoi. Likes to eat people and drink blood.’

‘I don’t understand,’ said Liz. ‘A moroi sounds exactly like a strigoi.’

‘Is not quite same. Strigoi can turn into wolf. Moroi is wolf all the time. Is very hairy monster.’

‘Okay, so I guess a moroi is even worse than a werewolf. What about vampires?’

‘Is many words for vampire. Vampir, nosferatu, pricolici, moroi.’

‘Hold on,’ said Kevin, scratching his head. ‘You already said that a moroi isn’t a vampire.’

‘Is complicated,’ hissed Mihai. ‘Vampir is dead person, killed by other vampir. So, person is dead, then comes back to life. Vampir is very strong, very fast, very terrible. Likes to drink blood. Blood makes vampir strong.’

‘Okay,’ said Liz. ‘I think I’m starting to get a grip on this. A strigoi is a shape-changer that might be a werewolf or some other kind of were-creature. A moroi is similar, but stays in wolf form all the time. And a vampire is someone who has been killed by another vampire and comes back to life and now drinks human blood.’

Mihai nodded. ‘Moroi may be vampir too, but must be dead first.
